How your child’s sitting position can affect their walking

As a child, I always remember being told to cross my legs but never once did I do it. It was always the ‘W’ Sit. And now I’m paying the price. Too often these days I see kids sitting in front of the television in a very awkward position, zoned out and unaware of future implications. A one off awkward position won’t do much but repeating the same process over and over, like any bad habit, will cause the bones to ossify into that twisted position. This twisting of the bones is known as torsion. So many parents are unaware.

An ongoing ‘W’ sit can lead to shortening of muscles, which can affect co-ordination, balance and development of motor skills.

But not to worry, Bones change throughout a life time, especially between the ages 0-12 so let’s break those bad habits!

What can you do for your child?

  1. Well the best thing to do is to send them outside to play! Running around and playing games to strengthen the legs and stimulate proprioception.
  2. Massage and Stretching is awesome way to encourage muscle growth and prevent muscle tightness.
  3. Provide your child with alternative sitting options. Encourage and persist in changing and breaking the habit. Here are the 3 best options for your child.

We often take for granted growing up and playing outside. Encourage your child to go outside and play. If further advice is needed, head over to our online bookings or call 9569 5145 and make an appointment with one of our team members today.
